Exercising outdoors brings all sorts of scenarios to mind, and most of them are set in wonderful places like beaches, country biking trails, mountains and other outdoor sporting venues. What is the urban worker or dweller to do? There are obvious answers, typically having something to do with running shoes or bicycles, but these are not the only possibilities. Walking in cities is often far more convenient than driving, and it is possible to extend the walks by simply getting off public transportation one stop sooner, or getting on it at a slightly different station. Cities have wonderful texture and walking can engage the city at any number of levels. Walking outdoors in cities is a great way to appreciate architecture, enjoy people watching, discover new restaurants or cafes, window shop, experience ethnicities and neighbourhood cultures, or simply feel the pulse of the city. Depending on the city, walking can be made more aerobic by choosing the hillier areas. Outdoor exercise can be combined with indoor walking, too, since most major cities have great museums and other sites to see.
