When you experience having your identity stolen, it’s important to notify all the correct authorities including the police, the FTC and even the local postal inspector if your mail was tampered with. You may also discover that the thief has changed your billing address on your current credit cards. Close those accounts as soon as possible. Then, when you open a new account, have it password protected so that you have to give a code to have any of the information changed on it. If your debit card or checking account has been tampered with, close it down too and change your PIN numbers.
