I remember when my son was 18 years old. He was madly in love with his newest high school girlfriend and had accidentally let it slip that they were planning on getting married in Vegas on graduation night. It was already April 20th, so to say I was upset would be an understatement. I sat him down immediately and talked with him. I let him tell me all about her, then I asked if he was willing to be with her for the rest of his life and always be there no matter what happened, even if she turned out to be a completely different person. As he was thinking about it, I told him how much divorce attorneys in Sacramento cost and how he would lose everything because courts usually side with the woman. Then I told him how much alimony payments usually were and asked if he wanted to be stuck with that for the rest of his life. Strangely enough, they didn’t get married after all.
