It is really nice to think of having free range chickens but ultimately you will need to protect your chickens from predators even if you want to let them run loose. You still need a chicken coup to protect your chickens at night. Most of us opt for a pen around the coop to keep chickens safe during the day. Unless you have a large area that is contained in some way perhaps a fence, it is risky business to let a flock of chickens loose.
