It has been raining, drizzling and just wet outside for the last day and a half. I think we would have driven each other crazy were it not for the kids play kitchen. The play kitchens are so inviting especially when you are cooped up inside; the kids haven’t started whining yet about not being able to go outside because they have been occupied with their kitchen. This morning they made pretend omelets and pancakes. It was so funny to watch them flip make believe pancakes up in the air. I can tell that ever since we got this kitchen the kids are more imaginative and free with their play.

Christmas is almost upon us and if you haven’t found that special gift to take their breath away this Christmas I suggest you look at pretend kitchens. There are so many styles and designs; some are whimsical while others are very realistic. There are some that stand like an island where kids can play on both sides, there are others that have to stand against a wall and I have seen one that is V shaped to fit in a corner. A pretend kitchen is the ideal gift because it is a big exciting gift to receive, kids will spend countless ours playing with it, and they are a very durable gift.

After going to a friend’s birthday party last month, my two young children have become obsessed with making animals out of party balloons. On the one hand, I think that this is a really good way to stimulate their creative side and improve their hand eye coordination. However their obvious frustration at only being able to make aliens (ie Giraffes that went wrong) has spurred me on to find if there exists a course for adults and children or a DVD where we could learn the art together. Party balloons are, of course, inexpensive and easy to get hold of but I think there is a place in the curriculum for this sort of thing. You could even include a bit of geography, biology and chemistry in explaining how balloons are made. One thing I am still not able to do, however, is show them how to make a real giraffe (with only four legs) and for my sins I will continue to hear the stamp of feet and the popping of aliens from another planet until my party balloons can be turned into a recognisable animal.

At last years event, I learned the hard way to always invest in a good Bouncy Castle Hire company, and to always get the adult size, even if you have youngsters.  My rambunctious bunch had destroyed the bouncy castle from the inferior company that we previously went with, in just a matter of a few minutes.  Needless to say, they were very disappointed in that party.  This year we invested in a bouncy castle from a much better company, and the kids had a great time jumping to their heart’s desire all day long.  As wild and crazy as my bunch are, I am really glad we did this for them – we all got a peaceful, unbroken, nights sleep that night.
